Listen. Let's Talk
[Repeated from Friday 11am.] A weekly show hosted by urbanist Donald Hyslop. This week: the second part of a wide-ranging discussion with Simon Slater the Independent Tenant and Leaseholder Advisor on the Woodberry Down regeneration project in London. As we further explore the anatomy of the regeneration process the conversation ranges from community involvement, governance, some thoughts on future models to address the housing crisis and as he reflects on his long involvement in the area. The Woodberry Down Estate in Hackney was built following the Second World War to bring much needed modern housing to Londoners. A strong and resilient community developed there. By the end of the twentieth century much of the housing stock was in need of repair, replacement and a major regeneration was planned. Over the last seventeen years that process has been taking place with an ambition to retain and rehouse the original communities whilst also developing new commercial properties for sale. This "twenty first century regeneration model" has and continues to attract both criticism and praise.
