Latin Waves

[Repeated from Sunday 1pm.] A bilingual programme (English & Spanish) presented by critic and producer Javier Chandía which covers Latin American music from its roots to the avant-garde. This week: the music of Tim Maia. When artists like Elis Regina and Chico Buarque were delivering the finest Brazilian pop, and Caetano Veloso and Os Mutantes were entertaining the students with avant-garde fuzz-poetry, Tim Maia was large, in charge and completely out of control. He was the personification of rock star excess, with multiple prison sentences, voluminous drug habits, five marriages, and a stint in an UFO-obsessed religious cult. His music helped to build the Black Rio movement, a mix of Soul, Afro Brazilian music and the U.S. civil rights struggle, that blew the doors off mass culture’s tightly circumscribed the role for Afro-Brazilians.
